The opening in the large מערכה, the end of ראוהו אחיו, and the start of the next chapter: the lottery for the תמיד jobs and the morning preparations

Overview

The amud opens by finishing a description of how growers made trees produce heavy beam-wood instead of fruit. The גמרא then turns to the משנה about the large מערכה on the מזבח, which had an opening on its east side, and asks why. רב הונא and רב חסדא disagree: one says the opening let the wind fan the fire, and the other says the כהנים lit the kindling from there. The גמרא challenges the second view, because the משנה says the kindling was lit from gaps between the logs. It answers that the כהנים lit it from many places. The chapter ראוהו אחיו then ends with the הדרן. A new chapter begins with a משנה. The ממונה holds a lottery for the morning jobs of the תמיד, including the nine portions carried to the כבש. Then the כהנים check for dawn, using either the call ברקאי or, according to מתיא בן שמואל, a question about the light reaching חברון. They bring a lamb from the לשכת הטלאים, one of four chambers in that building, take out ninety-three vessels, and give the lamb water from a cup.
