The morning תמיד service: opening the היכל, the far-reaching sounds and smells of the מקדש, cleaning the inner מזבח and the מנורה, and the binding, שחיטה and blood service of the lamb.
Overview
This amud is all משנה and follows the early-morning service in the מקדש. The תמיד lamb is checked again by torchlight. The כהנים who clear the inner מזבח and the מנורה go ahead with a basket, a jug and two keys. They enter the היכל through the northern side door, because a פסוק in יחזקאל keeps the southern one shut. Then they open the great gate, and the שוחט waits to hear it open. The משנה lists the מקדש sounds that could be heard from יריחו, and even the smell of the קטורת that made goats sneeze far away. Next the lamb is brought to the בית המטבחיים, and the inner מזבח and the מנורה are cleaned, ending the פרק with a הדרן. The new פרק explains how the lamb is bound and where it is slaughtered, and how its blood is placed on the מזבח.
