Consecrating only part of an animal: whether the holiness spreads to the whole animal, and what the partial holiness means in practice.

Overview

A ברייתא discusses someone who says, 'The leg of this animal is an עולה.' According to רבי מאיר and רבי יהודה, only the leg becomes holy. The animal is sold to someone who needs an עולה, and only the money for the leg is holy. רבא explains that the buyer is someone who vowed an 'עולה בחייה', so the missing leg does not hurt his vow. According to רבי יוסי and רבי שמעון, the whole animal becomes an עולה. רב חסדא, רבא and רב ששת each say that רבי יהודה agrees when the limb is vital, but they define 'vital' differently. A statement of רבי seems to refute all three, and the גמרא answers by filling in missing words. רבא then asks whether the rule applies to a bird and to a limb consecrated only for its value; both questions end with תיקו. Finally, the גמרא asks about shearing or working an animal that is only partly holy, and the amud ends with a question about slaughtering a holy mother whose fetus is not holy.

תָּנוּ רַבָּנַן:

The Sages taught:

יָכוֹל הָאוֹמֵר ״רַגְלָהּ שֶׁל זוֹ עוֹלָה״

One might think that one who says: "The leg of this one is a burnt offering"

תְּהֵא כּוּלָּהּ עוֹלָה?

the whole of it should be a burnt offering?

תַּלְמוּד לוֹמַר:

The verse states:
