Leftover חטאות that are left to die or to graze, and the ban on skinning holy animals from the feet
Overview
The amud opens with the last line of an earlier discussion about רבי אמי's teaching. Then רבי הושעיא rules that if someone sets aside two חטאות, one as a backup, he brings one and the other grazes. The גמרא asks whose view this follows, rules out the רבנן and רבי שמעון, and concludes it follows רבי, who says a leftover dies only when it replaced a lost animal. It defends this answer against a משנה of רבי אלעזר ברבי שמעון and against the משנה about the יום כיפור goats. Next, a ברייתא about when a leftover חטאת dies is corrected with a קל וחומר: if the animal was lost at the time of כפרה, everyone agrees it dies. The גמרא then brings a ברייתא forbidding skinning from the feet for a בכור and for פסולי המוקדשין. רב חסדא attributes the first rule to בית שמאי and the second to רבי אלעזר ברבי שמעון, and three reasons are given for the ban. The amud ends by closing the chapter ולד חטאת.
