Two holinesses on one animal: רבי מאיר's תפוס לשון ראשון versus רבי יוסי, and קדושה דחויה for the animal and its תמורה
Overview
Our משנה records a dispute about a person who says over one animal, "the תמורה of an עולה, the תמורה of a שלמים." רבי מאיר says only the first holiness takes hold. רבי יוסי says both take hold if he meant both from the start. רבי יוחנן narrows the dispute. Everyone agrees about "this, and afterward this" (only the first counts) and about "this only if that" (both count); the argument is only about the in-between wording of our משנה. The גמרא then brings ברייתות about an animal declared half one offering and half another. These show that רבי מאיר's rule is truly תפוס לשון ראשון, which is why the order of עולה and חטאת matters to him. Another ברייתא, following רבי יוסי, teaches that a half-עולה, half-שלמים animal is holy but not offered, and its תמורה is not offered either, because it comes from קדושה דחויה. Finally רבי יוחנן brings a partners' animal consecrated one half at a time, which is holy but never offered; his ruling continues on the next עמוד.
