רבי אבין's layered questions about an אשם whose holiness moved to a new animal or changed to עולה: can a new תמורה be made with it, and must a חומש be added when it is redeemed?

Overview

This amud is built around a series of questions from רבי אבין, all about an אשם whose holiness gets passed around. In the first case, a person already did תמורה with an אשם. It then got a blemish, so its holiness was moved onto a second animal. Later the owner atoned with a third animal, and the second animal became an עולה. The question is whether he can do תמורה again with that second animal. Each time, אביי objects that the case is overloaded: whichever factor bothers רבי אבין, a new animal or a new kind of holiness, could have been asked about more simply. The גמרא answers that רבי אבין is building one question on top of another (חדא מגו חדא). It gives this answer in two versions, the second based on רבי יוחנן's rule that you cannot do תמורה twice. Both versions end in תיקו. Next, רבי יהושע בן לוי rules that only a first הקדש adds a חומש when redeemed, and רב פפא shows from the פסוק that the חומש applies to the מקדיש, not the מתפיס. רבי אבין then asks the same kind of layered question about the חומש. That discussion runs through two versions, and the second continues onto the next amud.

Opening lines

וְהוּמַם וְחִלְּלוֹ עַל אַחֵר,

and it became blemished, and he redeemed it onto another animal,

וְנִתְכַּפֵּר בְּאָשָׁם אַחֵר,

and he achieved atonement with a different guilt offering,

וְנִיתַּק לְעוֹלָה —

and it (the second animal) was switched to be a burnt offering —

מַהוּ שֶׁיָּמִיר בּוֹ?

what is the law — may he substitute for it?
