Laws of the חליצה shoe: intention, material, the meaning of חלץ, and the status of an אנפיליא
Overview
The גמרא first confirms that people really do wear one shoe over another, since רב יהודה once went out in five layers. Next, רב rules that a young יבמה who grew up among the brothers may marry one of them, and the גמרא gives two readings of whether a sandal pulled off without intention matters. רב then teaches that a חליצה shoe must be leather, learned from תחש, though any leather works because the word נעל is repeated. A leather shoe with hair straps is fine, but an all-hair one is only a slipper. The גמרא proves from the words 'מעל רגלו' that חליצה means pulling the shoe off, even though the root חלץ can also mean strengthening. In a side story, רבן גמליאל answers a heretic who claimed ה׳ did חליצה from Israel. Finally, the גמרא resolves conflicting sources about the אנפיליא: a leather one counts as a shoe and a cloth one does not. A ברייתא supporting this begins at the end of the amud, and its ruling continues on the next amud.

- StatementA young יבמה who grew up among the brothers may marry one of them

- Resolutionרב meant: even if we saw it, we do not worry
- StatementSecond version: if we saw it, we do worry
- ResolutionIntention is needed to free her, but not to forbid her to the brothers
- StatementA sandal sewn with flax cannot be used for this
- ChallengeMaybe only תחש leather works
- ResolutionThe repeated word נעל widens the rule
- ChallengeThen why not every material?
- ResolutionOtherwise the word תחש would teach nothing
- QuestionA leather shoe with hair straps
- ResponseIt still counts as a תחש shoe
- ChallengeThen an all-hair shoe should work too
- ResolutionAn all-hair shoe is called a slipper
- QuestionHow do we know וחלצה means removing?
- ResponseProof from the stones with נגע
- ChallengeMaybe the word means strengthening, as in arming soldiers
- ResolutionArming soldiers also means taking them out
- ChallengeA challenge from the פסוק about the poor man
- ResolutionHis suffering earns him rescue from גיהנם

- ProofA משנה in שקלים also shows that an אנפיליא is not a shoe
- ChallengeA ברייתא about יום הכיפורים treats an אנפיליא like a shoe
- Resolutionאביי: the יום הכיפורים case has padding and is forbidden because of pleasure
- Rejectionרבא rejects אביי: comfort alone is not forbidden on יום הכיפורים
- Resolutionרבא: a leather אנפיליא is a shoe, a cloth one is not
- ProofIt makes sense: otherwise two יום הכיפורים sources would contradict
- ConclusionConclusion: leather אנפיליא versus cloth אנפיליא
- ProofA ברייתא lists unusual footwear for חליצה, including a leather אנפיליא
