Why יעל did not benefit from סיסרא, and which shoes are fit for חליצה: someone else's, a left sandal, a wooden sandal, and a sandal with צרעת or tied to עבודה זרה.

Overview

The גמרא finishes the principle that the good done by the wicked is bad for the righteous. It proves this from God's warning to לבן not to speak to יעקב 'either good or bad.' It explains that סיסרא harmed יעל by putting זוהמא into her, backed by רבי יוחנן's teaching about the נחש and חוה. Then it returns to the משנה. A ברייתא shows that anyone's shoe works for חליצה, as long as it fits the יבם. In a story, רב יוסף tells אביי to give his sandal to the יבם as a gift and objects to the left sandal אביי hands over. The גמרא asks whose view allows a wooden sandal: רבי מאיר, or everyone if it is covered in leather. Two students report רבא differently on a sandal with צרעת, and the גמרא tests the idea that something waiting to be burned counts as already crushed. רבא's final ruling is that a מוסגר, מוחלט, or עבודה זרה sandal should not be used, but a חליצה done with one is valid. The amud ends as he begins the separate case of a sandal offered to an idol.
