Valid sandals for חליצה, חליצה at night or on the left foot, and the essential acts of חליצה

Overview

The amud opens at the end of a ברייתא listing sandals that cannot be used for חליצה, including a burial sandal made to honor a זקן. רבינא asks why that sandal fails when the בית דין's own sandal is also not walked in. רב אשי answers that a court messenger may walk in the court's sandal, so it counts as a shoe. A new משנה follows: חליצה at night is valid and on the left foot is invalid, and רבי אלעזר holds the opposite on both. The גמרא explains the night dispute as a question of whether חליצה is like the start of a court case or like its verdict. It then tells of רבה בר חייא, who did a חליצה with a slipper, as a single judge, and at night, and of שמואל's criticism. Two explanations are given for what bothered שמואל. For the left foot, עולא learns the right foot from the מצורע, and the גמרא gives two ways to explain why רבי אלעזר does not use that comparison. Finally, a new משנה asks what happens if the woman leaves out reciting, removing the shoe, or spitting.
