Who holds that a minor's חליצה is valid (רבי יוסי, proven by the story of רבי ישמעאל and אבדן), the age a קטנה may do חליצה, the three judges required, and the prison חליצה before רבי עקיבא

Overview

The גמרא brings רב's teaching that the משנה's rulings on חליצה done by a minor boy or a minor girl follow רבי מאיר. רבי מאיר says the Torah's word 'איש' means the man must be an adult, and the woman is compared to him. The חכמים say only the man must be an adult, and the woman may be a גדולה or a קטנה. The גמרא identifies these חכמים as רבי יוסי and proves it with a long story about רבי ישמעאל בר רבי יוסי in רבי's study hall. The story includes his clash with רבי's attendant אבדן. At the end, רבי ישמעאל quotes his father in the חכמים's exact words, and אבדן is punished for insulting him. The גמרא then discusses how young a קטנה may be: רבי אמי says a little child, and רבא says the age of vows. The הלכה is that she needs שתי שערות. רב נחמן's two rulings together set exactly three judges for חליצה. Finally, the גמרא explains the prison חליצה that רבי עקיבא accepted: witnesses watched from outside, and both the חליצה and the ruling took place in prison.
