The חליצה ceremony: its order, how the פסוקים are read and recorded, the rules of spitting, and who calls out 'חלוץ הנעל'
Overview
The משנה describes the חליצה ceremony step by step. The judges advise the יבם, then the יבמה and the יבם each say their פסוק in לשון הקודש. She removes his shoe, spits so the judges see it, and says 'ככה יעשה לאיש.' Since רבי הורקנוס, the whole פרשה is read, and the תנא קמא and רבי יהודה argue over who calls out 'חלוץ הנעל.' In the גמרא, רב יהודה teaches that the order is the ideal way but not required, and a ברייתא backs this up. אביי and רבא argue about pausing after 'לא' when prompting the פסוקים, and רב כהנא says even רבא agrees about 'לא אבה יבמי.' The גמרא then discusses how to write a שטר חליצה, and the הלכה follows מר זוטרא, who wrote out the whole passage. It ends with rules for valid spitting and a story of רבי טרפון having everyone call out 'חלוץ הנעל' three times.
