Relying on סימנים and names: the drowned scholars, the sesame deposit, labeled vessels, and the worry about two people with the same name
Overview
This amud first finishes the case of the two drowned תלמידי חכמים. Their wives could remarry because the bodies were seen right away and identified by סימנים, so the ruling rested on the marks and not on the women. Next comes a man who deposited sesame with a friend. The friend claims the owner already took it back and that the sesame in his barrel is a different batch. רב חסדא wants to compare this to the drowned scholars, but רבא rejects the comparison. Sesame has no real סימנים, and a matching amount could just be chance. The גמרא then asks whether we worry that a container's contents were emptied and replaced, using a משנה about labeled vessels. It concludes that everyone worries about this, and the argument is only whether the label would have been erased. Finally, a letter reports the death of יצחק ריש גלותא, and אביי and רבא argue whether we must worry that there were two men with the same name. Each brings a proof. The amud ends by asking how אביי answers רבא's proof, and his answer comes on the next amud.

but rather on the identifying marks.
