Overview

The גמרא sets aside רב ששת's answer to a contradiction in a ברייתא about a man who did חליצה with his יבמה and then betrothed her again. It offers two new answers. רב אשי follows ריש לקיש and reads the first case according to רבי שמעון and the second according to ריש לקיש. רבינא follows רבי יוחנן and reads the ברייתא according to the רבנן. Each answer turns on which brothers are meant: those already born, or those born later. Next, רב אחא and רבינא disagree about a brother who is with the צרה after יבום was done: is it כרת or only an עשה? The גמרא ties these two views to ריש לקיש and רבי יוחנן. Then רב rules that the צרה of a סוטה is forbidden, since the Torah calls a סוטה 'defiled' like the עריות. רב חסדא challenges this from רבי שמעון, and the גמרא answers that his case is only a rabbinic סוטה. רב אשי then begins a new challenge from a משנה about a Torah-level סוטה who does חליצה, and the challenge continues on the next amud.
