The צרה of an ערוה: the end of the משנה, the sources for בית שמאי, and whether differing practices break לא תתגודדו

Overview

The משנה finishes the מחלוקת between בית שמאי and בית הלל about the צרה of an ערוה. It explains what happens to her fitness for כהונה after חליצה or יבום. It adds that the two schools still married into each other's families and relied on each other in טהרות. The גמרא gives רבי שמעון בן פזי's source for בית שמאי from the word ״החוצה״, and the two schools trade readings of ״חוצה״, ״לאיש זר״ and the extra ה. רבא then offers a different reason for בית שמאי: אין איסור חל על איסור, which works whichever brother married first. The גמרא explains why the משנה needed its lines about חליצה and יבום, pointing to רבי יוחנן בן נורי's proposal. Finally, ריש לקיש asks רבי יוחנן whether different מגילה reading days break לא תתגודדו, 'do not form separate groups'. Their back-and-forth about ערב פסח leads to the visible dispute over the צרות, which continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

חָלְצוּ — בֵּית שַׁמַּאי פּוֹסְלִין מִן הַכְּהוּנָּה,

If they performed חליצה, Beit Shammai disqualify them from the priesthood,

וּבֵית הִלֵּל מַכְשִׁירִין.

and Beit Hillel deem them fit.

נִתְיַיבְּמוּ — בֵּית שַׁמַּאי מַכְשִׁירִין,

If they were taken in levirate marriage, Beit Shammai deem them fit,

וּבֵית הִלֵּל פּוֹסְלִין.

and Beit Hillel disqualify them.
