Overview

The עמוד opens by finishing אביי's statement that everyone agrees a child from a נדה or a סוטה is not a ממזר, because קידושין take effect with both women. A ברייתא supports him and adds a third case, a שומרת יבם. The גמרא explains that אביי left her out because he was unsure whether the הלכה follows רב or שמואל about קידושין with her. Next the גמרא turns to שמעון בן עזאי's lineage scroll from the משנה, which also said that מנשה killed ישעיה. רבא tells how מנשה put ישעיה on trial, charging that three of his prophecies contradict the תורה of משה. ישעיה chose not to answer, escaped into a cedar, and died when the saw reached his mouth. The גמרא then answers the contradictions. ישעיה saw through an unclear glass while only משה saw clearly. A community is always answered, while an individual is answered especially in the ten days from ראש השנה to יום הכיפורים. The third contradiction depends on a disagreement between תנאים, which continues on the next עמוד.
