Overview

The משנה applies its rules for levirate acts done one after another to a יבם with two יבמות. It goes through cases that start with a מאמר and cases that start with a גט, and rules which ones need a גט and which still need חליצה. Then it gives the big rule: nothing counts after חליצה, wherever it comes in the series. A ביאה ends everything only when it is the first act, but רבי נחמיה says ביאה ends everything wherever it comes, just like חליצה. The גמרא first points out that everyone agrees a single גט or a single מאמר works on a יבמה. It explains that the רבנן gave them force so people would not think חליצה or ביאה is also ineffective. Next it explains that a flawed ביאה leaves room for later acts because of decrees against confusing it with forbidden cases. A flawed חליצה, though, needs no such decree, since any mix-up would cause no harm. The amud ends as רבא begins a new statement.
