Overview

The amud opens in the middle of an argument about a ברייתא where רבן גמליאל and רבנן disagree about a גט after a גט and a מאמר after a מאמר. The גמרא first tries to read their dispute as a dispute about זיקה. That reading would make רבנן clash with רבה בר רב הונא in the name of רב, who said an invalid חליצה must be repeated with all the brothers. He answers that both sides hold אין זיקה and argue only about a second גט or a second מאמר. The גמרא then quotes רבן גמליאל's ruling again and asks why the first woman cannot have ייבום. It answers that this is a rabbinic גזירה, so he won't come to do ייבום with the second woman. Next, רבי יוחנן says that רבן גמליאל, בית שמאי, רבי שמעון, בן עזאי and רבי נחמיה all hold that מאמר is a full acquisition. The גמרא brings a source for each of the five. Finally, it returns to the משנה's next line, 'כיצד? עשה מאמר', to begin a new discussion.
