Babies who become fit for מילה between the slaughter and the eating of the פסח; an ערל receiving הזאה; and the מצוה of פריעה
Overview
This amud continues the search for a baby boy who is not yet fit for מילה when the קרבן פסח is slaughtered but becomes fit by the time it is eaten. A baby who recovers from illness waits seven full 24-hour periods (מעת לעת), so his wait can end in the middle of the day. A teaching from the sage of לוד seems to say otherwise, but the גמרא explains that the healing day is stricter than the birth day. רב פפא, רבא, רב כהנא and רב שרביא each give another case: a sore eye that heals, parents freed from prison, a טומטום found to be a boy, and a baby whose head came out before the rest of his body. The גמרא defends רב שרביא's case: either the mother's fever kept the baby alive, or a crying baby can live. Next, רבי יוחנן rules that an ערל can be purified by הזאה, and proves it from the Jews in יהושע's time, who were sprinkled before their מילה and brought the פסח in טהרה. רב then teaches that פריעה was not given to אברהם, learning it from the words ״שוב״ and ״שנית״ in יהושע. The amud ends by asking why the Jews did not do מילה in the מדבר; one answer is the weakness from the journey, and the second answer comes on the next amud.
