Overview

The גמרא finishes explaining a source about an eight-month baby. If the baby's hair and nails are fully grown, רבי holds he may really be a seven-month baby who was simply delayed in the womb (משתהה). It then asks how רבא תוספאה could rule that a baby born twelve months after the husband left is legitimate, since that seems to follow רבי alone. The answer is that רבן שמעון בן גמליאל agrees, so the ruling follows more than one sage. Next, a ברייתא defines a סריס חמה and an אילונית as someone who reaches twenty without two hairs, and lists many physical signs for each. רב הונא says all the signs are needed, while רבי יוחנן says one is enough. The גמרא limits their argument to a man without beard hairs and uses this to explain the story of רבה בר אבוה checking רב נחמן. Finally, the גמרא returns to the משנה. It shows that the משנה's סריס is one born that way, following רבי עקיבא, and it begins reading the line about a סריס who did חליצה. That discussion continues on the next amud.
