Overview

The amud opens by finishing the definition of a סריס חמה: a man who never had even one moment of being able to have children. אביי gives a sign we can see to identify him, and the גמרא explains that the defect starts in the womb. The גמרא asks whether he might have been healed for a while in between. It answers that a defect of the whole body, present at birth and still present now, is assumed to have lasted the whole time; only a blemish on one limb needs checking again and again. Next the גמרא points out that רבי אליעזר seems to contradict himself, comparing our משנה with a משנה in נדה about one who never matured. שמואל's answer, quoted by רמי בר דיקולי, is that רבי אליעזר changed his mind, and a ברייתא shows he kept his view that a סריס חמה does חליצה. רבי אלעזר answers differently: the משנה in נדה is only about punishments. This leads to an argument between רב and שמואל about a boy who matured late. אביי defends רב by explaining that an אילונית goes straight from minor to full adult, and a ברייתא backs him up. Finally, רבי אבהו says we do not act on these signs until age twenty. The גמרא then questions whether a baby born in the eighth month can even live, and that discussion continues on the next amud.
