Whether חכמים can actively uproot Torah law, and the penalties on a woman who remarried in error

Overview

Right before this, רבה taught that חכמים can uproot a Torah law when they only tell a person to sit back and not act (שב ואל תעשה). רב חסדא lists cases he had planned to challenge him from, then drops the challenge, because every one of them only involves not acting. The גמרא then tries to prove that a Torah law can also be uprooted by active doing. It brings three sources: a נביא like אליהו at הר הכרמל, a canceled גט, and בית דין punishing beyond Torah law. Each proof is pushed off. A נביא's power comes from a פסוק, and emergency steps to guard the Torah (מיגדר מילתא) are a special case. For the גט, every marriage rests on the approval of the רבנן, so they can cancel the קידושין, even קידושין made through ביאה. Then the גמרא goes back to the משנה about a woman who remarried in error. It explains why neither husband may become טמא for her, take her found objects or earnings, or cancel her vows. Finally it quotes the next line of the משנה: a בת ישראל in this case can no longer marry a כהן.
