Overview

The amud opens by finishing a rejected idea. רבי יהודה cannot hold that a temporary dwelling counts as a house only מדרבנן, because that would lead people to mix up obligated and exempt produce when separating מעשרות. אביי then explains the מחלוקת about the מזוזה of the לשכת פרהדרין in a new way. Everyone agrees the chamber needs a מזוזה during the seven days the כהן גדול lives there. The only question is whether to make a גזירה for the rest of the year. רבא challenges this from the case of סוכת החג בחג, which shows the argument is about the actual days of use. So רבא says the reverse: everyone agrees the chamber is exempt the rest of the year, and the argument is about the seven days. He explains that each case has its own reason. For the סוכה, the question is whether a סוכה must be a דירת קבע or a דירת עראי. For the chamber, the question is whether a home you are forced to live in counts as a home, and רבי יהודה requires a מזוזה there only מדרבנן, so people will not say the כהן גדול is in prison. The amud ends by asking which תנא taught a ברייתא, which is quoted on the next amud.
