Is תרומת הדשן a full עבודה? Its garments, its amount, and whether a זר who performs it gets מיתה (רב vs. לוי).
Overview
This עמוד opens in the middle of a ברייתא about תרומת הדשן, the removal of ashes from the מזבח. רבי דוסא reads ״יִלְבַּשׁ״ as including worn-out garments, and a related ברייתא shows him allowing the כהן גדול's יום הכפורים garments to be reused by a כהן הדיוט. The גמרא suggests that רבי יהודה and רבי דוסא argue over whether תרומת הדשן is a real עבודה. It rejects this: both agree it is an עבודה, and they argue only about whether a פסוק is needed to teach that. Next, רבי אבין asks how much ash must be lifted, and a ברייתא of רבי חייא answers with a גזירה שוה from the מנחה: a handful. Then רב lists four services for which a זר gets מיתה, and לוי adds תרומת הדשן. The גמרא traces both views to במדבר יח:ז. רב excludes removal through ״עבודת מתנה״, while לוי includes it through ״דבר המזבח״. Finally, the גמרא challenges לוי with the rule of כלל ופרט. The answer begins with ״אמר קרא״ and continues on the next עמוד.
