Which services make a זר liable to מיתה (inside, outside, and in the היכל; עבודה תמה), and the details of the daily lotteries
Overview
This amud continues the discussion of which Temple services make a זר (non-כהן) liable to מיתה. From the פסוק "ולמבית לפרוכת ועבדתם", the גמרא learns that the rule 'only עבודת מתנה, not עבודת סילוק' applies only inside. Outside, even a removal service makes a זר liable. The ו of "ועבדתם" shows that the rule of עבודה תמה applies both inside and outside. רבא asks whether the היכל counts as inside or outside, and he answers from the extra letters of "ולמבית" that it counts as inside. The גמרא then tests this rule on the שלחן, the מנורה, and the מערכה on the altar. Each step turns out to be incomplete, except lighting the מנורה, which is not an עבודה at all. רב and רבי יוחנן disagree about the two logs, and a ברייתא is brought supporting each of רב and לוי. Finally, the גמרא returns to the משנה's lotteries. רבי יוחנן explains that they were repeated to stir up the עזרה. רב נחמן and רב ששת then argue about whether the כהנים wore weekday or holy clothes for the lottery.
