The third and fourth פייסות, why the קטורת goes to new כהנים, the afternoon תמיד lottery, and how the Sages reach four lotteries
Overview
The עמוד opens by finishing an earlier point: a ברייתא teaches that the כהן placed the פדר (fat) over the cut neck out of respect. A new משנה then lists the third פייס, for the קטורת, which was open only to new כהנים. It also lists the fourth פייס, for carrying the limbs from the כבש to the מזבח, which was open to everyone. The גמרא explains that no one offered the קטורת twice because, as רבי חנינא says, it brings wealth. אביי explains why the עולה, mentioned in the same verse, does not bring wealth: it is common, while the קטורת is rare. That verse leads to רבא's teaching that scholars who rule on הלכה come from לוי and יששכר. Next, רבי יוחנן rules that there was no separate afternoon פייס for the תמיד, and the גמרא defends him against several ברייתות, ending with the answer that שבת is different because the משמרות change. Finally, the גמרא shows that the fourth פייס does not follow רבי אליעזר בן יעקב and explains the reason for their dispute. רבא then shows how each Sage still reaches four lotteries, and a discussion of a תנא who counts five begins and continues on the next עמוד.
