Arranging the two logs as an עבודה תמה, when a service gets a פייס, and the opening of the new chapter on checking for dawn and the כהן גדול's immersion
Overview
The גמרא first tests רבי זירא's equation that a service followed by another service is not one a זר is חייב מיתה for. It answers the challenges from אברים ופדרים and from תרומת הדשן, so רבי זירא's question on רבי יוחנן stands. It then revises רבי יוחנן's statement: a זר who arranges the two logs is liable because it is an עבודה תמה. רבא objects that such a service should have its own פייס. The גמרא answers that the logs were joined to the תרומת הדשן lottery for the reason given earlier in the chapter. It then tests the rule behind רבא's objection against שחיטה, the night burning of אברים ופדרים, and תרומת הדשן, and explains each case. An attempted proof from a משנה that arranging the logs is a night service is rejected. The chapter בראשונה ends. The new chapter opens with a משנה about checking for daybreak before slaughtering the תמיד, the moonlight mistake behind that check, and the rule for when a כהן needs טבילה or only קידוש ידים ורגלים.
