How many immersions (טבילות) and sanctifications (קידושין) the כהן גדול performs on יום כיפור, and why one פסוק in the יום כיפור פרשה is out of order
Overview
This amud is about how many times the כהן גדול immerses (טבילה) and washes his hands and feet (קידוש) on יום כיפור. It opens by showing that both רבי מאיר and רבנן reach ten קידושין. רבנן place the last one at the end of the day, when he takes off the holy garments. A ברייתא then teaches that the פסוק 'ובא אהרן אל אהל מועד' is the only verse in the פרשה written out of order. It describes going back in to take out the כף and מחתה, and that happens only after the rams. רב חסדא explains why: there is a tradition of five טבילות, and the written order would give only three. רבי יהודה and רבי each bring a פסוק teaching that every switch from one service to another needs a טבילה. The ברייתא lists the five services, which alternate gold, white, gold, white, gold. Next it learns that each טבילה has two קידושין, one when undressing and one when dressing. This is shown from the פסוקים, from a קל וחומר, and from the extra words 'אשר לבש'. Finally the גמרא returns to רבי יהודה's source and asks how we know that switching from gold back to white also needs a טבילה, a question that continues on the next amud.
