The שעיר המשתלח (its remains, the meaning of עזאזל, and when the sender becomes טמא) and the burned פר and שעיר
Overview
This amud joins a מחלוקת already in progress: may one benefit from the remains of the שעיר המשתלח? The permitting view learns from "במדבר" and the forbidding view learns from "גזירה". Each side then explains what it learns from the other side's word. רבא rules that the remains are permitted, because the תורה would not command "send" in a way that sets a trap. Several ברייתות then explain the name עזאזל: a hard, rough cliff in the wilderness, the hardest mountain, or atonement for the deeds of עוזא and עזאל. Another ברייתא contrasts משפטים, laws reason would demand, with חוקים such as the שעיר המשתלח, which ה׳ decreed and we may not dismiss. The גמרא then brings the views of רבי יהודה, רבי יוסי, and רבי שמעון on when the sender's clothes become טמא. A new משנה describes the burned פר and שעיר: their אימורים are removed, the bodies are braided together and carried out, and the משנה gives a dispute about when the carriers' clothes become טמא. The גמרא corrects the משנה's wording, explains "קלען", and begins רבי's גזירה שוה for leaving the skin on, which continues on the next amud.
