How the burned bull and goat of יום כיפור are prepared, when they make the carriers' garments טמא, and where they are burned

Overview

This amud first finishes a גזירה שוה teaching that the burned bull and goat of יום כיפור are cut into pieces (ניתוח) but not skinned (הפשט), like the other פרים הנשרפים. A ברייתא gives the source for those other bulls. They are carried out whole, cut up like an עולה because of the shared words 'head and legs,' and left in their skin. רב פפא explains the reason for the skin: just as the dung stays inside the innards, the flesh stays inside its skin. The גמרא then turns to the משנה's מחלוקת about when the carriers' garments become טמא. A ברייתא reads 'outside the camp' to mean that the garments become טמא as soon as the offerings leave the first camp. Another ברייתא proves that burned bulls are taken outside all three camps, using extra mentions of 'outside the camp.' רבי שמעון uses the phrase instead for רבי אליעזר's גזירה שוה with the פרה אדומה. That link teaches that both are burned outside three camps and east of ירושלים. Finally, the גמרא asks where the רבנן burn them, and begins a ברייתא whose answer continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

מָה לְהַלָּן, עַל יְדֵי נִיתּוּחַ

Just as there, it is by means of cutting into pieces

וְלֹא עַל יְדֵי הֶפְשֵׁט,

and not by means of skinning,

אַף כָּאן, עַל יְדֵי נִיתּוּחַ

so too here, it is by means of cutting into pieces

וְלֹא עַל יְדֵי הֶפְשֵׁט.

and not by means of skinning.
