The source for יהרג ואל יעבור in רציחה (a סברא from רבא), followed by stories about an עוברה who smelled food on יום כיפור
Overview
Earlier, the גמרא learned that גילוי עריות falls under יהרג ואל יעבור by comparing it to רציחה. Now it asks how we know this rule for רציחה itself. The answer is a סברא, shown through a story: a man came to רבא and said the ruler of his town had ordered him to kill someone or be killed. רבא told him to let himself be killed rather than kill, because who says your blood is redder than his? The גמרא then turns back to the משנה's case of an עוברה who smelled food on יום כיפור and craved it. In the first story, רבי told people to whisper to her that it was יום כיפור. It worked, and her baby grew up to be רבי יוחנן. In the second story, רבי חנינא gave the same advice, but it did not work. The amud ends as רבי חנינא begins to quote a פסוק about that baby, and the פסוק comes on the next amud.
