Topic
Offering outside the proper place: unfit animals, non-final acts, the history of בָּמוֹת, and the penalties in each era
Overview
This amud is all משנה, and it moves through several topics about bringing קרבנות outside the proper place. First it lists animals and birds that are not fit to be offered right now, such as בעלי מומין, birds of the wrong age, אותו ואת בנו and מחוסר זמן. The תנא קמא says one who offers them outside is פטור. רבי שמעון says that if the animal will become fit later, there is a לא תעשה but no כרת. The חכמים answer that wherever there is no כרת, there is no לא תעשה either. Next the משנה lists eaten portions and preparation steps of the service that bring no punishment when done outside. Then it gives a timeline of when private בָּמוֹת were allowed or forbidden: the desert, גלגל, שילה, נוב and גבעון, and finally ירושלים. It ends with the penalties for offering outside in each kind of era, which offerings still had to go to the מִשְׁכָּן, and the start of a list of differences between a private בָּמָה and the public one. That list continues on the next amud.
