End of the משנה on private במות, and the argument over 'חוץ מגתה' for the פרה אדומה and whether the מבול reached ארץ ישראל

Overview

This amud finishes the משנה's list of Temple rules that do not apply on a private במה, such as needing a כהן or priestly clothes. It then names the rules that apply everywhere: פיגול, נותר and טומאה. The גמרא asks what 'חוץ מגתה' means for the פרה אדומה. ריש לקיש says it means outside the spot checked for graves. רבי יוחנן objects that all of ארץ ישראל counts as checked, so he explains it as slaughtering the פרה inside the walls of ירושלים. The גמרא asks why רבי יוחנן did not use the case of slaughtering outside the wall but not facing the entrance. It answers that he chose the more surprising case. It then shows that their argument depends on whether the מבול reached ארץ ישראל, which each side reads from the same פסוק in יחזקאל. Each side challenges the other, from the courtyards built for the פרה and from רבי יהושע's protest, and a new question begins that continues on the next amud.
