Which acts and which intentions can make a קרבן פיגול, including pouring the leftover blood and dipping the finger in an inner חטאת.

Overview

The גמרא first finishes a question about intentions made while collecting the blood. Planning to collect the blood tomorrow is not פיגול, but planning to pour the leftover blood tomorrow is. A ברייתא then shows that the altar's 'eating' counts for פיגול too. The answer is that it depends on which act the כהן is doing at the time: sprinkling the blood counts, but pouring the leftovers does not. Next, רבי יהודה בריה דרבי חייא and רבי יהושע בן לוי report that dipping the finger in the blood of an inner חטאת can make it פיגול. רב פדא and ריש לקיש object that פיגול is learned only from שלמים, which have no finger-dipping. After a long back-and-forth, the גמרא arrives at a general principle: whatever makes a קרבן פסול blocks פיגול, and whatever is required for it can create פיגול. רב מרי tries to prove this from a משנה about the מנחה, but the proof is pushed away. Finally, two ברייתות that disagree about dipping are explained as following the רבנן and רבי שמעון, and the גמרא begins to question that answer on the next amud.

Opening lines

אֶלָּא לָא קַשְׁיָא;

Rather, it is not difficult;

הָא דְּאָמַר: ״הֲרֵינִי שׁוֹחֵט

this one is where he says: 'I am hereby slaughtering'

עַל מְנָת לְקַבֵּל דָּמָהּ לְמָחָר״,

'in order to collect its blood tomorrow,'

הָא דְּאָמַר: ״הֲרֵינִי מְקַבֵּל דָּמָהּ

that one is where he says: 'I am hereby collecting its blood'

  5. StatementDipping the finger can make an inner חטאת into פיגול
  6. Challengeרב פדא objects: פיגול is learned only from שלמים
  7. RejectionNot every rule of פיגול comes from שלמים
  8. ResolutionBoth rules come from extra words in the פסוקים
  9. StatementA second report that dipping the finger makes פיגול
  10. Challengeריש לקיש: פיגול is learned from שלמים
  11. RejectionNot everything can be learned from שלמים
  12. ResolutionYes, even that rule comes from שלמים
  13. Rejectionרבי ירמיה: the comparison breaks down
  14. ResolutionThe rule from שלמים is a general principle, not a case-by-case match
  15. Proofרב מרי brings a משנה about the מנחה as support
  16. QuestionWhich שלמים step matches placing the handful in a vessel?
  17. RejectionPlacing the handful does not seem to match receiving the blood
  18. ResponseA necessary step counts even without a match, so dipping counts as carrying
  19. RejectionPlacing in a vessel really does match receiving the blood
  20. QuestionTwo ברייתות seem to disagree about dipping the finger
  21. RejectionThe two ברייתות follow the רבנן and רבי שמעון
  22. ChallengeWhy would רבי שמעון single out dipping the finger?
