A vessel's airspace in collecting blood and water, blemishes and age during the blood service, and an animal half outside the עזרה
Overview
The amud opens with רבי יוחנן's rule that the animal's veins must be over the vessel's airspace when the blood is collected. רבי אסי asks what happens if the bowl's bottom broke, so the blood passed through its airspace but could never rest there. רבי יוחנן answers from a ברייתא about a barrel under a water pipe. The גמרא pushes back, then explains that רבי אסי really asked two questions. It also brings other versions of the exchange from רב כהנא and רבה. Next comes a משנה about water for the פרה אדומה that flows into a barrel over a hand or leaves. From it רבי יוחנן proves that a vessel's airspace counts as the vessel, and he traces the משנה back to רבי צדוק's testimony. Then רבי rules that slitting the bull's ear before קבלה disqualifies it, and רבא brings a ברייתא extending the rule to קדשים קלים. After אביי's challenge, that ברייתא is limited to the age rule, which shows that age in קדשים is counted to the hour. The amud ends with רבי אלעזר's case of an animal inside the עזרה whose legs are outside.
