Mixed intentions in עבודה (רבי יוחנן and אילפא), and whether the first name or thought decides: the תמורה of an עולה and a שלמים, אביי and רבא, and רב דימי's link to רבי יהודה.

Overview

The amud opens by finishing an answer from the previous page: the רישא of the משנה is about two עבודות, while the סיפא covers one עבודה and two. The words 'זה הכלל' in רבי יהודה's ruling fit רבי יוחנן but are hard to explain for אילפא, and the גמרא leaves this as a קשיא. Then the גמרא quotes a משנה from מסכת תמורה. There, רבי מאיר says that if someone names one animal 'the תמורה of an עולה, the תמורה of a שלמים', only the first name counts. רבי יוסי says both names count if he planned both from the start. The גמרא asks what happens if both names are said together or if he says he wants to split the animal. אביי says רבי מאיר agrees in that case, and רבא says they still argue. רבא challenges אביי from שחיטה, and the גמרא adds challenges from קמיצה and the מנחת חוטא. Each time, אביי's side answers that the act can be divided into parts: two סימנים, the קומץ and the לבונה, or the steps of walking to the מזבח. The גמרא reports that some teachers followed אביי and others followed רבא. Finally רב דימי says רבי מאיר is following רבי יהודה's rule 'תפוס לשון ראשון', and he proves it from the משנה about פיגול.
