The meaning of the words טריפה and נבלה in the פסוקים about fat and about bird נבלה, and whether the purity of נבלה fat applies to a kosher or a non-kosher animal
Overview
The פסוק in ויקרא 7:24 says the fat (חלב) of a נבלה and of a טריפה may be used for any work. This teaches that such fat does not carry נבלה impurity. The גמרא keeps trying to find the job of the word טריפה in that פסוק. First it says the word includes a kosher wild animal (חיה), but that reading is pushed away. Then אביי says the word is needed for its plain meaning, and that answer is also knocked down. In the end רבא explains that the word teaches that the איסור of טריפה, like the איסור of נבלה, takes effect on top of the איסור of חלב. The גמרא then goes back to the bird פסוקים and shows how רבי מאיר and רבי יהודה each use the words טריפה and נבלה, including the rules of a כזית and כדי אכילת פרס. Finally a ברייתא proves that the purity of נבלה fat applies only to a kosher animal. It faces a competing comparison, and its reply continues on the next amud.

The steps (24)
- ChallengeThe rule about non-kosher fat already comes from 'the fat of a נבלה'
- ResolutionThe word טריפה comes to include a kosher wild animal
- ChallengeA wild animal looks just like a non-kosher animal
- ChallengeA second objection from 'ואכל לא תאכלוהו'
- Resolutionאביי: The word is needed for its plain meaning
- ChallengeBy that logic, the bird verse's word would also be needed
- ChallengeA טריפה cannot be compared to a non-kosher animal
- RejectionEven a טריפה from birth belongs to a kosher species
- Resolutionרבא: The איסור of טריפה takes effect on top of the איסור of חלב
- ResolutionWhy both נבלה and טריפה are needed
- QuestionWhat does רבי מאיר learn from the word טריפה?
- Responseרבי מאיר: excluding a bird slaughtered inside the עזרה
- Responseרבי יהודה learns it from a second טריפה
- Responseרבי מאיר uses both mentions of טריפה
- Responseרבי יהודה learns the non-kosher bird law from the word נבלה
- QuestionWhat רבי מאיר does with the word נבלה
- ChallengeThe first פסוק already speaks about eating
- ResolutionOne teaches the amount, the other teaches the time limit
- ResolutionWhy the time limit had to be taught
- StatementA ברייתא: the verse about fat speaks of a kosher animal
- QuestionMaybe the verse means a non-kosher animal
- ResponseProof by comparing fat to שחיטה
- ChallengeMaybe fat should be compared to a non-kosher case instead
- ResolutionThe ברייתא begins its reply
