אביי's ברייתא challenge to רב יוסף, רבא's rereading of it, and a question on רבי's view

Overview

Earlier, רב יוסף explained that the משנה about mixed-up offerings must be talking about women's קרבנות. The reason is that men's offerings need סמיכה. אביי challenges him from a ברייתא about a קרבן יחיד mixed with a קרבן יחיד or with a קרבן ציבור. In that ברייתא each animal still gets its own מתנות, and since יחיד is listed next to ציבור, the יחיד must belong to men too. רבא answers by questioning the ברייתא: why should it matter whether the animals were alive or slaughtered? He rereads it as being only about slaughtered animals. If each animal's blood is in its own cup, the כהן gives from each one. If the blood is mixed together, four מתנות for all of them are enough, and after the fact even one. So the ברייתא says nothing about live animals and does not argue against רב יוסף. The גמרא then turns to רבי's view in the same ברייתא, that a shared מתנה must hold enough blood for each offering. It begins to question whether רבי really holds this, quoting another ברייתא in which רבי speaks according to רבי אליעזר; that quote continues on the next amud.

Opening lines

אֵיתִיבֵיהּ אַבָּיֵי:

Abaye raised an objection to him:

קׇרְבַּן יָחִיד שֶׁנִּתְעָרֵב בְּקׇרְבַּן יָחִיד,

An individual's offering that got mixed with another individual's offering,

וְקׇרְבַּן צִיבּוּר שֶׁנִּתְעָרֵב בְּקׇרְבַּן צִיבּוּר,

and a communal offering that got mixed with another communal offering,

וְקׇרְבַּן יָחִיד וְקׇרְבַּן צִיבּוּר שֶׁנִּתְעָרְבוּ זֶה בָּזֶה –

and an individual's offering and a communal offering that got mixed with each other —

  6. Resolutionרבא rereads the ברייתא as about blood in cups
  7. StatementThe ברייתא quotes רבי's view on measuring the blood
  8. ChallengeDoes רבי really hold this view?
