Overview

The amud continues the question of whether a חטאת or an עולה is offered first. The גמרא challenges the rule that a חטאת comes first from two ברייתות. One lists bulls, rams, sheep and goats, read as the קרבנות of סוכות. The other puts the bull for עבודה זרה, an עולה, before its goats, which are חטאות. The first ברייתא is explained as being about נדבה offerings. The second is explained as a special case: either the word 'לחטת' is missing an א, or the פסוק says 'כמשפט' and fixes the order. That same idea of 'כמשפטם' lets the first ברייתא be about סוכות after all. Next the גמרא asks about three offerings that beat each other in a circle: a bird חטאת, an animal עולה, and מעשר. בבל and ארץ ישראל each break the circle in a different way. A new משנה then teaches that חטאות come before אשמות, gives the age and value of an אשם, and says that what is offered first is also eaten first. It also says the כהנים may cook the meat as they like, with a מחלוקת about adding תרומה spices. The גמרא opens by asking whether a תדיר offering or a holier offering comes first, and starts testing it from תמידין before מוספין. That test continues on the next amud.
