Wooden versus earthenware כלי שרת, and the laws of מריקה ושטיפה for pots used to cook קדשים, including part of a vessel, which offerings it covers, and תרומה

Overview

The amud opens by finishing an earlier point: even רבי יוסי ברבי יהודה, who accepts a כלי שרת made of wood, does not accept one made of earthenware. Then comes a story. רב יצחק בר יהודה left רמי בר חמא for רב ששת, because רב ששת answers from a משנה, while רמי answers from reasoning that one משנה can knock down. To test him, רב יצחק asks whether a pot used to cook a קרבן in only part of it needs מריקה ושטיפה in full. רמי says no and compares it to a garment splashed with blood. A ברייתא proves him wrong: the whole vessel needs it, and the source is the פסוק 'in a copper vessel'. The גמרא then brings a ברייתא that extends מריקה ושטיפה from חטאת to all קדשים, but not to תרומה, according to רבי יהודה. רבי שמעון limits it to קדשי קדשים. When a ברייתא shows that a תרומה pot does need cleaning, אביי, רבא and רבה בר עולא each explain that the פסוק frees תרומה from only one strict detail. Finally, a new משנה records רבי טרפון and חכמים arguing over how long a pot may be used during a רגל, and defines מריקה and שטיפה as done with cold water.

Opening lines

And even Rabbi Yosei son of Rabbi Yehuda

only said it about one of wood,

but about one of earthenware, no.

Rav Yitzchak bar Yehuda

  1. ConclusionEven the lenient view does not accept earthenware
  2. StatementA student leaves his teacher for another
  3. ChallengeThe old teacher teases his former student
  4. ResolutionWhy the student switched: answers from a משנה
  5. StatementThe teacher offers to answer from a משנה
  6. QuestionCooking in only part of a vessel
  7. ResponseNot needed, just like sprinkled blood
  8. ChallengeThe student objects that no source says this
  9. Resolutionרמי בר חמא defends his answer as logical, based on the garment case
  10. RejectionBlood stays put, but cooking spreads
  11. RejectionA second refutation: a ברייתא comparing the two laws
  12. ProofWhere הזאה is stricter
  13. ProofWhere מריקה ושטיפה is stricter, including the whole vessel

  16. ResponseThe פסוק says 'in a copper vessel', even in part of it
  17. StatementA ברייתא extends מריקה ושטיפה from חטאת to all קדשים
  19. Statementרבי שמעון: only קדשי קדשים need it
  20. QuestionWhat is רבי יהודה's reasoning?
  21. ResponseExcluding תרומה proves קדשים קלים are included
  22. Resolutionרבי שמעון uses 'אותה' for something else
  23. ChallengeA ברייתא shows that a תרומה pot does need cleaning
  24. Resolutionאביי: For תרומה, only the part of the pot that was used needs cleaning
  25. Resolutionרבא: A תרומה pot may be cleaned even with wine
  26. Resolutionרבה בר עולא: A תרומה pot may be cleaned even with hot water
  27. ChallengeHot water exemption does not fit the view that scouring is done with hot water
  28. ResolutionFor that view, תרומה is exempt from the extra rinsing
  29. StatementThe משנה: may one pot be used for the whole רגל?
  30. StatementWhat scouring and rinsing are, and that both use cold water
