How long a court announces a sale of orphans' or הקדש property, and when it may sell young orphans' property to pay a debt or a כתובה.
Overview
A ברייתא gives three opinions on how long a court must announce a sale of orphans' property and of הקדש property. רב חסדא, quoting אבימי, rules sixty days for orphans and says this follows רבי מאיר. He explains that רבי מאיר's thirty days means announcing every day, while sixty days means announcing only on Mondays and Thursdays. The גמרא then brings a dispute about when the court may sell young orphans' property to pay a debt at all. רב אסי says only when interest is eating into it. רבי יוחנן adds a widow's כתובה, because her food support keeps costing the estate. A משנה, a משנה in גיטין, and a ברייתא are each brought as challenges, and the answers end with the idea that these cases are about a father who admitted he still owed. A story about a divorced woman's כתובה shows another version of רבי יוחנן's reason: חינא, so that she can remarry. Finally, רב נחמן explains why he began collecting from orphans, and the הלכה follows רב הונא בריה דרב יהושע: we hold back only when there is a doubt whether the father already paid.
