Guarantors for a כתובה, collecting debts from הקדש, and what a person who owes ערכין may keep
Overview
The amud opens by finishing the story of רב הונא, whose father משה בר עצרי had guaranteed his כתובה. The גמרא says the father was a קַבְּלָן, a stronger guarantor, and gives two ways this works even though רב הונא was poor. It then quotes the full מחלוקת about which guarantors are bound, and rules that every guarantor is bound except an ordinary עָרֵב for a כתובה. Next comes a case about a wife who collects her כתובה from a buyer. רב פפא and the Sages of נהרדעא disagree about whether the husband must vow not to remarry her in that case. A new משנה teaches that a wife and a creditor cannot collect directly from הקדש. Instead, the property is redeemed, even for one דינר, and the גמרא explains why and how far this method reaches. A second משנה lists what the treasurer leaves for someone who owes ערכין: food, clothes, a bed, sandals, תפילין and work tools. The גמרא begins to give the פסוק behind this, and the quote continues on the next amud.
