Where סתם חרמים go, how each side learns its laws, רב's ruling, the פומבדיתא case, and רבי ישמעאל on consecrating a בכור

Overview

The גמרא opens with a ברייתא. חרמי כהנים cannot be redeemed: they are הקדש while still with the owner and become ordinary חולין once the כהן receives them. It then asks what each side of the משנה's מחלוקת learns from the other side's פסוק. רבי יהודה בן בתירא uses ״כשדה החרם״ to teach that a כהן who made his own שדה חרם into הקדש does not keep it at the יובל. The רבנן learn that law from the extra ה in ״החרם״. Next, רב rules like רבי יהודה בן בתירא, and the גמרא explains this through a tradition that reverses the names in the משנה. A story in פומבדיתא shows רב יהודה letting a man redeem his חרם onto four זוזים, while עולא would have given everything to the כהנים. A ברייתא ties שדה החרם to the יובל, and the גמרא answers that this applies only to land in ארץ ישראל. Finally, a new משנה has רבי ישמעאל settle two clashing פסוקים about making a בכור holy, the גמרא explains the רבנן's reading, and the chapter ends with the הדרן.
