Torah study, ברכות and immersion for a בעל קרי
Overview
The גמרא first works out what רבי יהודה means in the משנה when he says a בעל קרי 'blesses.' It suggests he only means thinking the ברכות silently, but a ברייתא shows that רבי יהודה wants them said out loud. רב נחמן בר יצחק answers that רבי יהודה treats these ברכות like הלכות דרך ארץ. A ברייתא then teaches that Torah must be learned with the awe of Sinai, so a בעל קרי is limited in learning. The תנאים argue about how far that limit goes. רבי יהודה בן בתירא holds that words of Torah, like fire, cannot become impure, and רב נחמן בר יצחק rules that practice follows him. The גמרא then discusses the immersion of a בעל קרי: pouring nine קבין instead of a full מקוה of forty סאה, the fence this immersion makes against sin, and immersing in hot bathhouses. רב דימי limits the nine-קבין leniency to a sick person with an involuntary emission. רבין then begins to report an incident in אושא, which continues on the next amud.
