Trusting an עם הארץ about the purity of wine and oil: the גליל versus יהודה for קודש, and the pressing season for תרומה

Overview

The amud opens with the end of the משנה: an עם הארץ is trusted about mixed jugs of wine and oil during the pressing season and for seventy days before it. The גמרא asks why the משנה trusts people in יהודה but not in the גליל for wine and oil of קודש. ריש לקיש answers that a strip of כותים land lies between the two regions, and passing through it makes the produce טמא. The גמרא tests this answer three times. A closed box does not help, because the משנה follows רבי, who holds that an אהל זרוק is not a tent. A sealed clay jug does not help, because קודש is not protected by a צמיד פתיל. The חברים of the גליל who made their produce pure simply stored it until אליהו comes. Next the גמרא asks how the משנה can trust an עם הארץ with תרומה during the pressing season when another teaching does not trust him. רב נחמן answers that the משנה is about people who press in season and the other teaching is about late pressers. רב יוסף's answer, that the other teaching is about the גליל, is rejected from a ברייתא. Finally, רב ששת is asked whether a כהן who wrongly accepted a barrel after the season may keep it until the next season, and he begins to answer from a משנה that continues on the next amud.
