רבי's split ruling on stirring and covering a pot, the dispute about אפשר לסוחטו, and a new משנה on the udder and the heart

Overview

This עמוד continues the case of a drop of milk that fell on one piece of meat cooking in a pot. רבי gave a split ruling: רבי יהודה seems right when one did not stir or cover from the start, and חכמים seem right when one stirred and covered. The גמרא first asks why רבי יהודה would forbid even with constant stirring. It answers that he worries the stirring was not thorough. Next it explains that the case where חכמים are right is stirring and covering from beginning to end. From this it infers that חכמים themselves permit even late stirring, so they must hold אפשר לסוחטו מותר. רב אחא מדפתי suggests the argument might really be about מין במינו. רבינא answers that only the אפשר לסוחטו reading explains why רבי gave one case to each side. Then a new משנה teaches that an udder and a heart should be torn open to remove their milk and blood, but skipping this is not a Torah violation.

Opening lines

מִכְּלָל דְּרַבִּי יְהוּדָה סָבַר:

By inference, Rabbi Yehuda holds:

כִּי נִיעֵר מִתְּחִלָּה וְעַד סוֹף

when one stirred from beginning to end

וְכִסָּה מִתְּחִלָּה וְעַד סוֹף – אָסוּר,

and covered from beginning to end, it is forbidden.

אַמַּאי? הָא לָא בָּלַע כְּלָל!

Why? It did not absorb at all!
