Which animals, parts and milks are included in the איסור of בשר בחלב, and whether one איסור can take effect on top of another.
Overview
The גמרא finishes proving that the plain word גְּדִי ('kid') includes a calf and a lamb, so בשר בחלב applies to all kosher domesticated animals. The Torah adds 'of the goats' only where it means goats, and the גמרא defends this reading with the rule of שני כתובים הבאים כאחד and with two limiting words, עזים and העזים. Then שמואל reads each of the three mentions of 'גדי' and 'בחלב אמו' as including or excluding cases: fat, a dead animal, a fetus, blood, the placenta, non-kosher animals, and certain kinds of milk. The גמרא asks how three words can teach so much, and answers that some teachings share one word and others come from logic. Since that answer assumes שמואל holds אִיסּוּר חָל עַל אִיסּוּר, the גמרא raises a contradiction from his teaching about a טמא כהן eating טמאה תרומה and gives three answers. רב then rules that milk from a female goat that has never nursed is forbidden, because she can become a mother. Finally, רבי אמי and רבי אסי argue whether one who cooks חלב in milk gets מלקות. The גמרא shows that the argument is about cooking, not eating, and the explanation continues on the next amud.
Opening lines
כָּאן גְּדִי עִזִּים,
Here it says 'a kid of the goats,'
הָא כׇּל מָקוֹם שֶׁנֶּאֱמַר גְּדִי סְתָם –
so anywhere 'kid' is said plainly,
אֲפִילּוּ פָּרָה וְרָחֵל בַּמַּשְׁמָע.
even a cow and a ewe are included.
וְלֵילַף מִינֵּיהּ?
But let us learn from it?
