Overview

A ברייתא asks where we learn that a mother animal's own meat may not be cooked in her own milk. It builds a קל וחומר from אותו ואת בנו, and then gives the פסוק "בחלב אמו" as the source anyway. The גמרא asks why a פסוק is needed if the קל וחומר works. Three אמוראים try to break the קל וחומר with counter-cases: a horse and a mule from the same mare, a slave and his freed sister, and כלאי זרעים. Each one is rejected. רב אשי finally breaks it with logic: a kid and its mother's milk are two bodies, but a mother and her own milk are one body. רב אשי then learns the ban on eating בשר בחלב from "לא תאכל כל תועבה", and רבי אבהו's rule adds that every 'do not eat' also forbids benefit, unless the Torah makes an exception, as it does for נבלה. רבי מאיר and רבי יהודה argue over whether נבלה may be given or sold to both a גר and a גוי, and they debate what the word 'או' teaches. After a סימן, the גמרא opens a new challenge against רב אשי's תועבה rule, which continues on the next amud.
