Overview

The גמרא has been using the idea that whatever the Torah made 'abominable' (״תִּיעַבְתִּי לְךָ״) is forbidden to eat. Here it tests that rule against case after case. Food made by breaking שבת is permitted, because the פסוק says only שבת itself is holy, not what is made on it. Produce from plowing with an ox and a donkey together, or from threshing with a muzzled cow, is permitted by a קל וחומר from שבת. Crops from כלאי זרעים are permitted. Only כלאי הכרם must be burned, and a הקש to mixed-breed animals shows that field produce is fully permitted. Mixed-breed animals and the young slaughtered on its mother's day are permitted, because the Torah bans them only as קרבנות. The mother bird of שילוח הקן is permitted, because the Torah would not command releasing a forbidden bird that someone might eat. Then ריש לקיש begins a new topic: he learns that eating בשר בחלב is forbidden from the extra word ״מְבֻשָּׁל״ in the פסוק about the קרבן פסח. רבי יוחנן starts to reply, and his words continue on the next amud.

Opening lines

מַעֲשֵׂה שַׁבָּת לִיתַּסְרוּ,

then the products of Shabbat desecration should be forbidden,

דְּהָא ״תִּיעַבְתִּי לְךָ״ הוּא.

because it is something 'I made abominable to you.'

אָמַר קְרָא: ״כִּי קֹדֶשׁ הִיא לָכֶם״ –

The verse says: 'For it is holy to you' —

הִיא קֹדֶשׁ, וְאֵין מַעֲשֶׂיהָ קֹדֶשׁ.

it is holy, but its products are not holy.
