Overview

The amud begins by testing two cases in רבי שמעון's list of 'unfit' slaughters, the פרת חטאת and the עגלה ערופה. Slaughtering either of these may still be a fit slaughter, so רבי שמעון might hold the slaughterer liable for אותו ואת בנו. For both cases the answer is that the case 'is not part of the משנה.' The גמרא then argues about who said this about the עגלה ערופה. רבי ינאי could not have said it, since he could have split the case into before and after the heifer's descent to the נחל איתן. ריש לקיש could not have said it either, because he learns the מצורע's birds from the עגלה ערופה and so holds it is forbidden while alive. So the statement is given to רבי יוחנן. A new משנה then rules that when two people bought a cow and its calf, the first buyer slaughters first, though this is only a court matter. Whoever goes first is 'זריז ונשכר.' Another משנה counts lashes by forbidden acts, and סומכוס disagrees about the middle generation slaughtered last. Finally, a ברייתא learns from the plural לא תשחטו that the איסור covers both orders, mother then offspring and offspring then mother.
