Whether רבי יהודה's "אימתי" explains or disputes; the shared עירוב תחומין, its purpose and timing (ברירה); and which child is covered by his mother's עירוב

Overview

This amud first settles a contradiction from the previous discussion: שמואל and רבי יהושע בן לוי are two different אמוראים, so they may simply disagree. The גמרא then examines רבי יהושע בן לוי's rule that רבי יהודה's "אימתי" and "במה" always explain the חכמים. רבי יוחנן says "אימתי" explains but "במה" disagrees. The גמרא challenges "אימתי" from the case of disqualified witnesses, where a ברייתא has the חכמים disqualify a gambler even if he has another job. It answers that this strict view follows רבי יהודה in the name of רבי טרפון, who holds that a commitment made in doubt is not real, as in the case of an uncertain נזירות. That makes a gambler's winnings like stolen money. After the הדרן closing פרק חלון, a new משנה teaches how one person makes an עירוב תחומין for the whole town, and that each person must accept it before nightfall. The גמרא brings רב יוסף's rule that such an עירוב is only for a מצוה, and רב אשי's reading that 'while still day' is about being informed, so the משנה does not prove אין ברירה. Finally, רב אסי rules that a six-year-old goes out with his mother's עירוב. A ברייתא ties this to whether the child still needs his mother, which the גמרא defines and dates to about age four or five, setting up a challenge to רב אסי that continues on the next amud.
